Girindrasekhar Bose (1887–1953) was an Indian psychoanalyst and physician, renowned for founding the Indian Psychoanalytic Society. Born into a prominent family in British India, he studied chemistry at Calcutta's Presidency College and earned his medical degree in 1910. His early practice included hypnotic therapy, influenced by his interests in yoga and magic.
Bose advanced his studies in Psychology at  the University of Calcutta, became a lecturer, and promoted psychoanalysis, he made it a mandatory engagement for the students of Psychology in the University. His doctoral thesis, "Concept of Repression" blended Hindu philosophy with Freudian concepts. The same had initiated a correspondence between Bose and Freud, and had led to the formation of Indian Psychoanalytic Society in 1922, Bose being its founding president.Known for his unique therapeutic techniques, Bose emphasized cognitive change through his theory of "opposite wishes" and had challenged the universalist assumptions in psychoanalysis. He engaged Freud in a discussions about cultural variations in concepts like castration anxiety, specially among Indian patients. Bose's contributions extended beyond clinical practice, ensuring the society's stability throughout his presidency until his death in 1953.Dr. Bose's studies on Karma, Philosophy, and Psychology integrate Eastern philosophical insights with modern psychological theories, mirroring Freud's insights into the unconscious mind. He elucidates karma as a dynamic force shaping thoughts, emotions, and behavior, the same also poses a challenge toward the prevailing notion of self-awareness and consciousness. His work provides a framework that enhances individual psychological well-being and fosters spiritual growth, synthesizing Eastern traditions with contemporary psychological paradigms. Bose's interdisciplinary approach enriches our understanding of human behavior, emphasizes karma's impact on personal development and collective consciousness. The present volume, selected for re-publication, demonstrates that the seminal works of the Father of Psychoanalysis in India remain as relevant and influential as when first written, serving as a foundation for future generations in the discipline.
